Increase in sick leave entitlement

There have been some recent changes to employment law that you may not be aware of and will affect your business if you have staff members.

As of 24th July 2021, employees who have worked for an employer for six months or more will be entitled to 10 sick days per year, as opposed to the previous 5 days.

Employees are entitled to take these days if they, or a dependent (which can now include stepchildren, are sick or injured.

This change will only affect those who currently receive less than 10 sick days per year, and the maximum amount of unused sick leave an employee can be entitled to will remain as 20 days.

Employees will get the extra five days when they reach their next entitlement date – either after reaching 6 months’ employment or on their sick leave entitlement anniversary (12 months after they were last entitled to sick leave).

Make sure you have updated your HR / Payroll systems, to keep track of these changes when they come into effect.
